Gum Drop Atom Lab

DescriptionAtoms are the building blocks of matter. All matter is made up of atoms. Atoms are the smallest particles of matter. Atoms are made up of protons, electrons and neutrons. Protons are positive, electrons are negative and neutrons are neutral. The number of protons, electrons and neutrons determines what kind of atom it will be.
Materials
3 different colors of gum drops, 3 of each color.

Toothpicks

Paper towels

Procedure

1.Pick 3 different colors of gum drops, 3 of each color. Assign each color to a subatomic particle.

Protons (+) _____________________

Electrons (-)____________________

Neutrons (0)____________________

2.Arrange your subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons) into a 3 dimensional model of the atom. Use the toothpicks to stick the gum drops together.

a.Create your nucleus first. The nucleus of an atom is made from protons and neutrons.

b.Add the correct number of electrons with full length toothpicks.

3. Raise your hand and have Mr. Rose check your atom model BEFORE YOU EAT IT!

4. Draw, color and label your atom below.
